Results from the recent nominations for NZDFA positions have resulted in a vacant position on the Executive Committee and an election required for the Selection and Appointments Panel. The nominations for the DINZ Board producer appointed member have been extended till 12 April 2024.

The industry has had a remarkable journey since the first deer farm was licenced in 1970 and the theme of this year’s conference aims to reflect this change in the industry: “An incredible legacy – the past, the present, the future".

The Hawke's Bay Branch finally managed to have their day after their event originally planned for 14 February 2023 was called off at the eleventh hour. A good decision too with everyone waking up to the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle!

In 2023 Waipa hosted the CK Import Export Rising Stars after a long hiatus but the mood was dampened by the impact of cyclone Gabrielle just a week before. With a clear run of non-events, the 2024 competition this weekend gone was a great success.

Pop this date in your diaries - we'll be heading to Canterbury! Plans are coming together for the 11th Next Generation Programme on 3 and 4 August and it's shaping up to be a fantastic event. We're opening expressions of interest to attend. Thanks to Canterbury West Coast Branch NZDFA and Elk Wapiti Society NZ for hosting this years event. 

After last year's hiatus, we've reached the attendee limit for the conference, dinner and field day. It's awesome that so many of you are keen to join us again and we're looking forward to seeing you all in Ashburton next week!

The NZDFA are keenly aware that our deer farmers in affected areas will need all the support they can get. An auction is being organised for Wed 15 March at 7.30pm to raise money to help put farms back together after Cyclone Gabrielle.

Justin Stevens reflects on the impact of the recent storms and cyclone, the 2023 CK Import Export Rising Starts competition and the venison price.

Due to the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle, this year's conference will not be held in Napier. Instead the Canterbury West Coast Branch of the NZDFA will be welcoming attendees to Ashburton on Wednesday 10 May.

The 2023 CK Import Export Rising Stars competition was hosted by Waipa NZDFA in Te Awamutu on 25 February 2023. It was a great event with 49 entries received from throughout the country and almost 100 people attending the awards dinner.

People travelled far and wide to join the 90th birthday celebrations of one of the first founding fathers of the NZ Deer Farmers' Association, Bob Swann. Bob was presented with a 2022 special Matuschka award in recognition of his lifetime of contribution to deer farmers, the NZDFA and the wider industry.

Karen Middelberg on what the NZDFA Executive Committee have been up to, including planning for the October Branch Chairs meeting, advocating for deer farmers with HWEN and an opportunity to order a NZDFA jacket.

The NZDFA Executive Committee recently had the opportunity to meet with the venison marketing managers from Alliance, Duncan NZ, First Light, Mountain River and Silver Fern Farms. It was a great opportunity to share the issues and initiatives from all sectors of the industry.

The NZDFA along with DINZ hosted 4 Ag ITO students from 08–12 August as part of a Future Deer Farmers Experience tour to show them the deer farming industry. The selected students were Joel Loxton, Katie McNeill, Angus Gardner and Olivia Anderson.

"The P2P Programme has certainly made an impact on our farming operation, not just in what we do, but how we do it." Justin Steven reflects on how the P2P has impacted him as a farmer.

Update of the growth of venison in the USA market

Sometimes you forget people have lives outside deer farming. We were reminded of this in the nicest way recently with regard to Otago’s Becker family.

A companion to the 2018 Deer Industry Environmental Management Code of Practice will be launched soon through the Deer Industry New Zealand website.

Five farms, 12 sheds and a venison lunch turned out to be a crowd pulling event on a cold Southland winter’s day.

DINZ received the following Advisory from Transporting New Zealand. It is provided as a reminder that MPI will be checking on registrations and ear tags for deer being transported.

The National Velvetting Standards Body (NVSB) and its auditors met in Wellington during the week of 27 June, to discuss the upcoming velvet season and audit process.

DINZ and the South Canterbury North Otago branch of the NZDFA invites all deer farmers, and farmers interested in deer to the National Technical Workshop which this year will be held at the Mackenzie Community Centre, Fairlie on Wednesday 03 August 2022.

Applications are now open and close 5pm Friday 29 July 2022.

The five venison marketing companies all met with the NZDFA Executive Committee last week to provide an update on the year so far and the outlook for the upcoming spring season.

Notification of the results of nominations for the Deer Industry New Zealand Board, and the NZDFA Executive Committee and Selection and Appointments Panel positions.

John Douglas has been face-to-face with consumers for around 20 years, so he knows New Zealanders are still constantly surprised to find farm-raised venison’s non-gamey taste and tenderness, compared to wild venison.

The 47th NZDFA AGM will be held in Wellington on Wednesday 25th May with a Branch Chairs Meeting to be held the day before on the 24th. 

Trials of new products for Chinese restaurants and retail are underway for Silver Fern Farms in China.

We're shaking things up this year and have replaced the usual national conference with several half-day regional DINZ Road Trip events throughout June.

With the roar underway, there will be a lot of hunters in the hills. There will also be wild stags running along deer farm boundary fences looking like they belong in the freezer. Both have implications for bovine TB control.

Only one month to go, entries close 5pm, Wednesday 4 May.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of research on farming deer and during the year we will look back at some of the early work and how the research has allowed the industry to develop.
