Asher, G. W. (1985) The fallow deer rut
The Deer Farmer
This paper outlines the behaviour of both the male and female fallow deer. It illustrates that the frequency of groaning in the male is related to the frequency of mating, and that liveweight is at its lowest during the rut due to the high level of testosterone. Female behaviour during the rut is also described, with particular reference to the oestrus and pre-oestrus behaviour
