Hill, S. (2002) Review of calving losses in an intensively managed red deer herd 
          NZVA Deer Branch Conf. Proceedings
          This study showed that reproductive wastage in yearlings reflects failure to conceive as much as calf death.  The main causes of wastage were seen to be, overcrowding, hind to hind disturbance and disruption to the hind calf bond in early life.  Improvements may be made by lowering stocking density and enhancing the calving environment

          Six studies were carried out in red deer stags to test hypotheses concerning the importance of steroidal control of velvet antler growth and to investigate mechanisms by which these hormones exert their effects.  Overall it was concluded that velvet antler growth can occur without testosterone stimulation during the period of velvet growth, but the data reinforce the concept that the timing of antler growth is linked to the annual cycle of testosterone
