Producer-Appointed Director Appointed to Deer Industry New Zealand Board | Issue 205
SAP comment on Producer-Appointed Director Appointed to Deer Industry New Zealand Board
11th November 2024
The Selection Appointments Panel (SAP) would like to provide an update on the recent appointment of John Tacon to the Deer Industry New Zealand (DINZ) Board following the conclusion of the producer-appointed director selection process for 2024.
We want to begin by thanking all producers for their patience during this process and acknowledging the disruption that has been felt across the industry as we worked to restore the DINZ Board to full strength. The time taken to resolve this matter has been longer than anticipated, and we deeply appreciate the understanding and continued support from producers throughout this period.
Appointment Process and Appeal Outcome
The appointment process culminated in a secret ballot on June 13, 2024, to determine the new producer-appointed director. Following the outcome of the ballot, an appeal was lodged in accordance with the Operating Code of Practice. As per the guidelines, an independent Appeal Panel—comprising three members—was convened to assess the appeal. This panel operated autonomously and independently, as outlined in DFA bylaw provisions.
After a thorough review, the Appeal Panel found that none of the Grounds of Appeal presented by the appellant were substantiated, and therefore, the appeal was not upheld. As a result, the SAP was able to confirm the appointment of John Tacon to the DINZ Board, as announced in the DINZ eNews Special Edition on October 23, 2024.
Commitment to Strong Governance
The SAP, along with the Deer Farmers' Association (DFA) Executive, are elected by producers according to their natural election cycles, while producer-appointed DINZ Board members are appointed by the SAP for a three-year term. It is important to note that these appointments are intended to ensure that the board reflects the full breadth of experience and expertise needed to represent the interests of New Zealand deer farmers.
A key priority for the SAP is to ensure that all producer-appointed DINZ Board members bring a complementary mix of skills, experience, and perspectives to the table. The SAP carefully considers the strategic needs of the industry and works within a well-defined process guided by the Operating Code of Practice.
In line with best governance practice, we engaged a professional and independent governance advisor to provide support and insight throughout the selection process. This ensured that each candidate was rigorously assessed, and that the appointment process remained robust, fair, and transparent.
Looking Forward
We trust that this update provides reassurance to producers that the SAP’s process for appointing producer directors to the DINZ Board is both equitable and reflective of the long-term interests of the industry. We understand the importance of strong governance and remain committed to ensuring that the DINZ Board is equipped to navigate the challenges ahead.
Once again, the SAP would like to extend its sincere thanks to producers for their patience and understanding over the past four and a half months while the appeal was worked through. We appreciate your continued engagement and support as we move forward together to strengthen the future of the New Zealand deer industry.
