Freshwater Farm Planning Support Available

As part of the Integrated Farm Planning Programme, which wrapped up in May, many deer farmers attended workshops and developed freshwater farm plans using QCONZ, MyEnviro, or other online farm planning tools.
While the programme has now concluded, we want to ensure farmers feel comfortable with where they have got to with their plans and have the support they need to complete any remaining work.
If you have not quite finished your plan, are unsure about the next steps, or would like to talk through any aspect of your farm planning, please let us know.
We are currently identifying where additional support may be needed and how best to provide it.
If you think some additional support could be useful, please complete the short form: Farm Planning Support Form
Alternatively, you are welcome to contact Amy Wills directly at amy.wills@deernz.org.

We’re looking for new members to grow the AgriZeroNZ Farmer Focus Group, to ensure it represents the diversity of New Zealand’s livestock farming businesses.
The objective of the group is to provide AgriZeroNZ with a ‘farmer voice’ to help ensure the emissions mitigation tools we’re investing in are fit-for-purpose to help enable on-farm adoption.
Some of the representation we’re looking to specifically strengthen is deer farming perspectives.
If you, or others in your network, have any suitable recommendations, please encourage those farmers to register their interest via the contact form on our website by Friday 19 June. If you’re able to help spread the word about this opportunity to your team and farmers, we’d appreciate the support!
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

So I'm listening for the weather to predict the coming day…
Leave all thought of expectation to the weather man.
The word for the next few months is “El Niño”. A recent presentation by NIWA (now called Earth Sciences NZ) had the following key messages:
- El Niño is coming (now with greater certainty) and will be a dominant factor for 2026, early 2027
- Dryness will come in chapters, rainfall deficit through winter, spring to bring stronger winds
- West Coast and Southland likely to see more rainfall than normal, cooler days
- Canterbury the region most likely to feel it, as notably drier than usual for this time of year
- The coming El Niño is expected to last 6-9 months. If coming in July/Aug, that could see it linger through summer.
- It has a reasonable chance of being a historic event.
