Reminder: Withholding periods for use of pharmaceutical products post-velvetting

Nov 1, 2024

Deer products, including velvet, are part of the National Chemical Residues Programme (NCRP), and if residues are found either here in New Zealand or our overseas markets, it could impact our wider trade.

The National Chemical Residues Programme (NCRP) tests animal material and animal products to demonstrate that residue and contaminant levels meet acceptable standards.

Velvetters and supervising veterinarians must take all reasonable steps to ensure that velvet removed under the NVSB velvetting programme is done in strict compliance with the recommended practices as documented in this Code. This should ensure that the residue thresholds are met for velvet removed under the Code.

The NZ Food Safety Authority will undertake, at its discretion, surveys and monitoring of residues in velvet for compounds approved under this Code, to ensure that velvetters are adhering to the recommended practices.

For further information we recommend you refer to the NVSB Farmer Velvet Antler Removal Manual, Page 84, Section 5: Residues.

It should also be noted that adherence to withholding periods is required for meat as per the declaration required on an ASD. If you do not know the details of any treatment, the minimum withholding period of 91 days applies. This is for cattle, deer, sheep, goats, alpacas and llamas.

If you require further information, please contact John Ladley, DINZ Industry Capability Manager (021 821 333).
