Key Facts about the 2016 programme:

When: Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th August (11am start time on the 24th and finish time around 2pm on the 25th)
Where: Canterbury - Hawarden and Hanmer Springs

Day 1: Farm Visit – Sam and Mark Zino’s Flaxmere and Kanuka Downs farms, Hawarden, Canterbury

Bus departs from Christchurch Airport

Welcome 

 

Session 1 - Flaxmere finishing property

• Farm system

• Monitoring information – including 1st June weights predicting kill flow

• Lucerne, pastures and crops – how they fit together

• Efficient use of irrigation

Lunch

 

Session 2 - Kanuka Downs breeding property

• Farm system

• Feeding hinds through summer and winter

• Use of legumes, self-fed silage and crops

• Stags, recent addition to the mix

 

Session 3 - Profitability of the different enterprises

Financials, including comparison of various enterprises – Breeding Deer, Finishing Deer, Velvet, Sheep, Beef, Dairy Support.

Day 2: Theory Day, Hanmer Springs

The Next Generation and the Future of Deer Farming

Where is the industry headed and what is your role in the future of deer farming

Travel back to Christchurch Airport, arrive by 4pm. 

Accommodation: We have secured accommodation with Hot Springs Motor Lodge (also venue for the Theory Day) with all rooms costing $140. This price is only available through DINZ, so you must book with us. Rooms are able to be shared, so when registering, please indicate if you'd like to or not. Please let me know if you would be interested in sharing. UPDATE rooms at the Hot Springs Motor Lodge are at capacity. More rooms are available at the Heritage Hanmer for $155. These are single rooms only and must be booked through DINZ.

Transport: The bus will be departing Christchurch Airport at 9.15am and will return by 4pm the following day. For those flying in, you must let me know your flight number so I can keep track of when you are due in. For those who are not flying but want to catch the bus, you must let me know. Seats are limited.

For those of you that are interested and are NZDFA members, talk to your local branch chairman. In past years certain branches have assisted in supporting their members in attending this event.
